While being involved in any kind of automobile accident is very serious, getting into an accident with a semi truck can easily be catastrophic. Many people are intimidated driving around semi trucks, and given their immense size and weight this is not a surprise. However, there are several tips and tricks you can use to make sure that you are safe around these roadway behemoths. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, it is imperative that car’s stay out of the large blind spots that semi trucks have.
This not only applies to trucks, but large buses as well. A good rule of thumb is to assume that if you cannot see the mirrors of the truck or bus, the truck or bus cannot see you. Make sure that you are not lingering for a long time in the blind spot of a semi truck. Adjust your speed either to stay ahead of the semi truck or behind it so that you are sure you are seen.
Passing safely is also of utmost importance. You never want to pass a semi truck on the right, because this is where the truck’s largest blind spot is located. Make sure that you can fully see the truck in your rearview mirror before you pass in front of it. This will give you plenty of room to merge safely.
You do not want to cut off a semi truck. Again, because they are so much larger than regular four-wheel vehicles, they require much more lead time when stopping. If you cut off a semi truck, it may not be able to slow down in time to avoid crashing into you.
